Don’t forget to drive through the park to the historic Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel for breathtaking views of Zion. If you have the time, don’t skip Bryce Canyon National Park to see the one-of-a-kind rock formations, located just two hours northeast of Zion and worth the drive. 

 

Joshua Tree, CA

 

Just an hour outside Palm Springs, California, and four hours from Las Vegas, Joshua Tree National Park is famed for its unique desert landscape. The park is known for its unique spire-shaped rock formations, also known as hoodoos, and its spectacular stargazing opportunities. Visitors can hike down into the amphitheater for close-up views, or you can even ride a horse down if that is more your speed.

 

Mojave National Preserve, California

The Mojave Desert is home to an incredibly diverse network of ecological habitats. Visitors can explore lava tubes, hike to the top of the Kelso Dunes, go horseback riding, and have the opportunity to encounter some unique wildlife such as the iconic Desert Tortoise. Located in the Mojave Desert, Valley of Fire State Park is home to 46,000 acres of red Aztec sandstone, and is a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike, and for good reason. Valley of Fire gets its name from the bright red sandstone that appears ablaze under the hot desert sun. Visitors can enjoy a large network of hiking trails that take you through slot canyons, rock arches, and ancient petroglyphs–remnants of ancestral Puebloan communities. Valley of Fire is home to two first-come first-serve campgrounds with RV hookups so guests can immerse themselves in the park. 

 

Major Destinations Near Las Vegas, NV

Hoover Dam, NV

Located on the border of Nevada and Arizona, at 726 feet tall and 1,244 feet long the Hoover Dam is a marvel of modern engineering. They offer guided dam tours and powerplant tours, as well as a self-guided visitor center tour, check out the website for updated tour information. 

San Diego, CA

San Diego is known for their beautiful weather and miles of white sand beaches, and it’s only a 4-5 hour drive from Las Vegas. Visitors can explore all this coastal city has to offer, from harbor cruises to the world-renowned San Diego Zoo, to the vibrant nightlife of the Gaslamp Quarter. 

Sedona, AZ

There is no shortage of red rock landscapes in the Southwest, and Sedona, tucked below dramatic red mountains, is no exception. There are seemingly endless options for hiking and mountain biking, or if you need a day to recharge, check out Sedona’s local art galleries for a souvenir worth showing off.  Much of this area is only accessible in overland vehicles, while offroading is not covered by our insurance, fear not because there are plenty of Jeep tours that run out of Sedona that will take you far into the desert.

Phoenix and Scottsdale, AZ

Located 4-5 hours from Las Vegas, Phoenix visitors can explore the Desert Botanical Gardens to learn about the local flora, hike Camelback Mountain, or learn about Indigenous culture at the Heard Museum. Nearby Scottsdale is home to a thriving art scene if you want to check out some local art galleries.  

Salt Lake City, UT

In the winter Salt Lake City is home to some of the best skiing in the West, and in the summer these mountains are the perfect change of scenery if you are coming from Southern Utah. Park City is located just 45 minutes from Salt Lake making it an easy day trip in the summer or winter. If you visit in the summer, take a drive up either Big Cottonwood Canyon or Little Cottonwood Canyon for extraordinary views and amazing hikes. If skiing or snowboarding is on your agenda, you can’t miss this stop; the Wasatch Mountains are home to Park City, Snowbird, Alta, Deer Valley, and Solitude, just to name a few.

Valley of Fire State Park

The Valley of Fire State Park features 40,000 acres of stunning red Aztec sandstone rock formations and petrified trees and petroglyphs dating back over 2,000 years. The visitor center is a highly recommended stop where you can learn about the history of the park and all it has to offer. There are two campsites in Valley of Fire and they are both first-come first-serve, so we recommend getting there as early as possible since this is a favorite among locals. This campsite has electrical hookups, restrooms, grills, and drinking water.
